My Why

Ever since I was young, I’ve always been curious about how things work—especially computers. But what really sparked my journey into cybersecurity was seeing firsthand how vulnerable people and businesses are to cyberattacks. Watching news stories about companies losing millions and individuals having their identities stolen made it clear to me that the internet, which connects us all, is also a gateway for harm.

For me, cybersecurity is deeply personal. It’s about protecting people—people like my family, my friends, and the small business owners who rely on technology to keep their livelihoods afloat. The more I learned, the more I realized that defending systems from attacks is not just a technical challenge, but a way to help others feel safe in a world where trust is often at risk.

I thrive on the idea that every day brings a new puzzle to solve—whether it's analyzing a potential threat, stopping a phishing attempt, or finding ways to strengthen security policies. It's the thrill of staying one step ahead of attackers, combined with the satisfaction of knowing that my work can prevent someone else from becoming a victim.

Cybersecurity isn’t just about keeping systems secure—it’s about keeping people secure. And for me, that’s a mission worth pursuing.

Work

Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS) to monitor real-time traffic and detect any suspicious activities across the network. This was like having a digital watchdog, sniffing out any malicious behavior before it could cause damage. With Microsoft Authenticator adding an extra layer of multi-factor authentication and a robust SIEM system to track and log events, we achieved an 82.3% reduction in system compromises! Along the way, I also conducted phishing simulations and training sessions, where we had a little fun testing the team’s ability to spot suspicious emails. Watching everyone become more security-savvy was a win in itself!

Web Application Vulnerability Scanner to hunt down and expose weak spots in the company’s web applications before any malicious hackers could get to them. This tool automatically scanned for common vulnerabilities like SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), and other sneaky exploits that could compromise sensitive data. It was like having an automated security expert running 24/7, alerting us to risks before they became actual problems. Plus, I made sure the scan results were accessible and easy to understand, so the entire team could track progress and see any vulnerabilities flagged in real time. I’m currently working on a credit card fraud detection system to catch suspicious activity before it impacts customers or the business. This system will use machine learning algorithms to analyze transaction patterns and flag anything unusual, like sudden large purchases or odd geographic locations. Once fully implemented, it will act as an early warning system, helping us detect fraud in real time and respond immediately. The cool part is, we're building this with transparency in mind, so key team members will have access to a dashboard where they can monitor flagged transactions and see trends as they happen. I’m excited to watch this project come to life and help keep everyone’s finances safe!

Hey! I’m Joshua Simpson, a cybersecurity nerd with a serious love for protecting the digital world. My journey into this field started with my curiosity about how computers and systems work—and more importantly, how to keep them safe from all the bad stuff out there. Armed with certifications like Security+, CySa+, PenTest+, and more, I’m always learning and staying ahead of the latest cyber threats. I’ve got degrees in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance from WGU, and I like to think that all my studying is paying off—whether it’s securing a network, running a vulnerability scan, or setting up a fraud detection system. But I also like to keep things fun. I’m getting into YouTube and Twitch content creation, trying to mix my love for gaming and tech with some community connection.
